The Humane Society of Stillwater operates a NO-KILL nonprofit shelter that exists on donations from the public. We house dogs and cats here until they are adopted permanently into good homes. The Humane Society shares a building with the City Animal Welfare shelter, and aids in the adoption of animals there. Stillwater's Animal Welfare division can only hold animals for a limited time period; at the end of that period, they are euthanized. Whenever space is available, the Humane Society takes in those animals that are at risk of being euthanized.

Dumpster Diving for Dogs and Cats

The Stillwater Humane Society needs that old dining room set you have been meaning to replace, that riding lawnmower that needs a major overhaul, or last year’s fashions. Big or small, proceeds from all that clutter you have been meaning to part with can now go to a great cause—help reduce the number of lonely and abandoned cats and dogs in Stillwater by donating your stuff for a garage sale.

The annual Parkview Estates garage sale is June 2. Sales and setup begin around 7:00 am. Look for more information in the NewsPress or contact Parkview Estates for directions and scheduled times.

If you don’t have anything to donate, please consider coming out just to see all of the eager canines and kittens needing loving homes. Just imagine a Labrador out there waiting to show you how fast she can swim or a kitten that enjoys the smell of coffee as much as you do.

If you are short on cash or already have a houseful of animals, please look through your attic, garage, shed, and closets for big items that can help support the operations of your local humane society. Your donation of any kind is considered a charitable gift for tax purposes.

Items to be donated should be priced and delivered to the shelter at 1710 South Main no later than May 31. Call first to make sure someone can help you unload. The number is 377-1701. We ask that large items be delivered directly to Parkview Estates the early morning of June 2. The shelter doesn’t have a trailer or transport vehicle to haul or a storage shed to house the items being donated.

In fact, if anyone is interested in donating any of these necessities to the shelter, they will come at a very serious time. Most of the humane society’s proceeds fund a full time director and cover costs to maintain so many animals. Funds are desperately needed for adoption efforts, volunteer incentives, and to maintain the old building.

Whether this year turns out to be a good fundraising year is yet to be seen. What is certain is that shelter volunteers take great pride when they see people come out to an adoption event. Please come support the animals, the volunteers, and open your heart to love.
